Considering a Birth At Home?

There are some that believe that there is no need for a hospital when it is time to give birth. Doctors are often used in a maternity setting, but are not really needed in some cases. Some people never step foot in a hospital when they have their children, opting to have them at home as it has been done for as long as man has walked the earth. If you are considering a birth at home, there are a few things that you should consider and things to watch out for as your pregnancy and then your labor progresses.

You can have a safe birth at home if you have a normal pregnancy without any complications. If you have had problems with past pregnancies, you may not want to give birth to a child in your home. Those that have had problems with high blood pressure, problems with the placenta, or have had premature birth in the past should see a doctor for a pregnancy as they are at higher risk to have problems the second and third time around. Don’t take any chances with your baby or with your own health.

If you want to give birth at home, and you feel that you are healthy and/or have had smooth pregnancies in the past, this should be your option. What you want to do is to find someone that can be there to assist you that can help if there are problems. Many women who want to have a home birth will hire what is known as a doula or a midwife to be there when they go into labor. They can help with comfortable positions, coaching, and also cleaning up the baby. They also help you deliver your placenta and with cutting the umbilical cord. They can also call for help if something where to go wrong.

What is important in a birth at home is comfort and having your baby right there with you without having to pack up to stay in a hospital. You have more control over everything when you do it at home with assistance from a trained doula or midwife. When you are choosing, make sure you hire someone that knows when to insist that you seek medical help if something does go wrong, and that has basic skills with newborns. Ask about their experience and training and any certification that they may have.

You also have to be realistic when you give birth at home. This may be something that you want very badly, but you have to be willing to go in for help if that need arises. You don’t want anything to happen to you or your baby if there is a problem. Know where your nearest labor and delivery hospital is located, and have a plan to get there in the event that you need to go. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly with your home birth, but the best thing is to be prepared in the event that you need help.
